Surgeon Careers And Plastic Surgery

Surgeon Careers

From the moment you enter school, people begin talking to you about what you want to do with your life and what career path you may want to take when you grow up. Children often find that they are drawn to one subject over another and those who are drawn to science often find that, when they are older, they are drawn into the medical field. Being drawn into the medical field often then leads to one of many surgeon careers.

One of the kinds of surgeon careers is becoming a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgery was being done in India in 2000 B.C. In 1794, the description of Indian Rhinoplasty was published in the Gentleman's Magazine. In 1815, the first plastic surgery was done in the United States by a man named Joseph Constantine Carpue. The first true American plastic surgeon was Dr. John Peter Mettauer who did a cleft palate operation in 1827. When anesthesia became established, surgeries on healthy tissue became much more popular when before, they had caused great pain. The invention of antibiotics also made elective surgery much more popular so plastic surgeons careers were created.

Plastic surgery has become more and more popular as the years have gone on with 15% of medical specialists being plastic surgeons. In 2004, 12 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States alone and that number is going to continue to increase. In recent years, we have seen how people are more and more concerned with looking younger, being thinner, and looking more and more perfect. Plastic surgery is one venue people take to meet these wants and needs. Plastic surgeons perform a wide variety of surgeries that can repair, restore, or improve lost, injured, defective or misshapen body parts. Some of these are mastectomies, contracture surgery for burn victims, sexual reassignment surgery, Rhinoplasty, Abdominoplasty, Augmentation Mammaplasty, Chemical peel, and Collagen injections. The basic description of plastic surgery is a medical job specializing in correcting or restoring the form and/or function of any body part.

Plastic surgeons salaries range based on years of experience, the state they work in, their specialty, and the facility they work in. A recent search on salary.com showed that the current average salary for a typical plastic surgeon in the United States is $286,540 per year. If you search based on years of experience, the average income is shown as $237.000 for someone with 1-2 years of experience, $412,000 for three or more years of experience with the maximum being $820,000.
